CORRESPONDENCE (D) New York, N.Y., reports 5/4/38:
Inquiry reports subject formerly connected with the P. and E. Corp. 420 Lexington Ave. N.Y.C., referring to Mr. Gill Erwin or Mr. Coffyn. Mr. Frant T. Coffyn was contacted at this point and advised subject was never associated with the P. and E. Corp. or Mr. Erwin or himself, and if same was given as a reference he had no right to do so. We were advised they consider him entirely irresponsible and regard him as a very poor credit risk. He was located at their offices in #305 of this office building for a period of about six months, using same as his headquarters. In an interview he stated he was acting at same as a technical adviser for foreign governments and companies advising them on all phases of the aviation industry, and arranging for purchases of airplanes and equipment. He stated he did not buy or sell under his own name nor did he act as a sales agent for any concern but acted only as a representative for prospective purchasers on a fee basis. Our informants report he left owing considerable money to various individuals connected with the above concern. They report they would be greatly interested in his present whereabouts for the purpose of bringing legal action against him.
Local New York bank reports an account formerly in the name of Jacqueline Payne for about one year, subject having power of attorney on same. Account caused them considerable trouble and was finally dropped by the bank. An official of this bank reports subject was seen in the immediate vicinity of his farmer place of business about one week ago but have no record of a residence address.
Divorced from first wife, Marietta N. Payne. Now married second time.
Informants report subject's last known address was the Broadmoor Apes., in Washington, D. C. Records indicate a file address for subject at 36 Green Ave, Amityville, Suffold Co., Long Island, N.Y. We also find an address of 156 Fox Lane, Northport, Suffolk, Co., L.I. N.Y. Both of these are former addresses. In a personal interview tih subject as of 6/1/37, he advised he had no permanent address locally, but was stopping with friends on Long Island, refusing to reveal the exact location.
We have been unable to contact Mr. Hugh Copeland, c/o Roosevelt Aviation School, L.I. or Colonel Harold Hartney, Great Neck, L.I.
