Dear General:

This is to express my appreciation for your recent letters pertaining to the genesis of the 'Jeep.'  These communications are more in the nature of manuscripts than letters. The fact that you wrote so many pages in long hand, without the aid of a stenographer, is indicative of your interest in this matter.

I am inclosing a copy of your manuscript for your records.

Since writing to you, I have had the honor of interviewing General Herr who supplied a great deal of very interesting and valuable information relative to the 'Jeep.'

I have also met the man you mentioned, Charles Harry Payne and have had a number of interviews with him. Mr. Payne has also supplied me with a considerable amount of printed matter in the form of newspaper articles, pictures, et cetera..  In addition to this, he has agreed to write out in full, his entire story of the 'Jeep' for me and in it include references to letters and documents on file in the War Department to verify it and to supply a list of the names of officers, Government officials, engineers and manufacturers who contributed to the development of the 'Jeep.'

I have temporarily discontinued the writing of my book until I have received this manuscript from. Mr, Payne.

In the meantime, may I again express my sincere gratitude for your co-operation.
