3D Scanning CJ-2 Panels
On July 11, 2015, I had Jim Buchanan and Chris Hill of the 3D Print Factory in Hancock, MD scan some Jeep panels in order to develop 3D models of them.
There were 2 goals for this. The first one was to be able to accurately capture the "JEEP" stamping on the windshield and hood. This will be used to determine if the 2
are identical. If so, the plan is to create tooling that will allow for the reproduction of the later CJ-2 tailgate. The second goal was to create a 3D model of the rear
wheelhouse top panels and the rear floor. This will allow for the accurate reproduction of these panels for CJ2-12 and CJ2-16 (CJ2-12's floor is missing and CJ2-16's floor
is beyond saving).
The first part of the scans done were to scan various stampings from CJ-2As. Because I didn't want to remove the paint from CJ2-37 at this time to get an accurate scan,
I used CJ-2A panels I acquired over the years to be able to get the metal thickness and have the ability to create tooling if I want for the WILLYS and Jeep script stampings
on various panels. The parts were sandblasted so it can be accurately scanned with the paint removed. The panel sections were:
CJ2-29 Tailgate | CJ2-29 Tailgate - JEEP Stamping |
CJ-2A Tailgate - Front | CJ-2A Tailgate - Rear |
CJ2-16 Tailgate - Front | CJ2-16 Tailgate - Rear |
CJ2-06 Rear Floor | CJ2-09 Rear Floor |
CJ2-37 Rear Floor | CJ2-37 Rear Floor |
CJ2-06 Wheelhouse - Front - Right | CJ2-06 Wheelhouse - Rear - Right |
CJ2-09 Wheelhouse - Left | CJ2-09 Wheelhouse - Right |
